OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires that all forklift operators obtain certification. Formal Training

Practical Lessons
Practical lessons will be the first hands on portion of the OSHA forklift training certification process. Forklift operations will transpire as trainees are supervised. This gives individuals the opportunity to become familiar with a forklift and ask any questions before evaluation.
Evaluation
The evaluation portion of the OSHA forklift certification has no written sections. Instead, you are evaluated on how safely and correctly you operate a forklift. A supervisor will ask you to perform some tasks with the forklift and evaluate your procedures.
Once you receive your OSHA forklift training certification it is good for 3 years. However, many businesses will require their own evaluations on performance to ensure their employees are safely operating machinery. If an accident occurs (or a close encounter) an operator may be required to do more training.
When businesses receive new forklifts or ask you to use a different machine that you are not certified on, you will have to undergo OSHA forklift certification training again. This is because you are only certified on a certain type of forklift, not all are the same! This precaution is a beneficial choice because being informed is the best way to keep people safe.
